Research for your informative article

So, you're writing an informative piece for your group blog. Where to start?!?

That's right! Research! Click below for some links to help you get started.

Since you'll be working in a medium used primarily by the media, a good place to start would be the same sources the media uses. Press releases are short articles written by various organizations that they provide to newspapers and magazines to inform the public about what is going on in their organization and to promote themselves. For instance, film producers send out press releases with the trailer and images of their new movie so newspaper writers have something to work off of when they want to cover that story.

Violence in Chicago is pretty newsworthy, so there are a lot of places that send out relevant press releases. Try the Chicago Police Department, for instance. Their website offers a lot of information about specific incidences of violence throughout the city. You could try looking at one or two specific events to base your article around, or perhaps a trend concerning causes of certain crimes.

The office of Mayor Rahm Emanuel is another option. Also try the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns, of which Rahm is a member. Many of you expressed interest in gun control policy; if you want to go in that direction, these sites may be key.

For some useful facts and figures you can incorporate into your articles, look at this site found at the Chicago Tribune. It has statistics of violence in Chicago, organized by neighborhood. An exposée about violence in a certain neighborhood would make for an excellent article.

I have also been told that as a Kappa League member, you have been given access to a number of academic databases. AWESOME. Use that. If you get lost, feel free to shoot either me or Mr. Ziolo an email and we can help you navigate.

On all of these sites, there will be a lot that doesn't apply to your article or even our project as a whole, but there will most likely be something there that you will find useful in your research.

Happy blogging!
